P46 is an example of one of the earliest forms of the New Testament; the papyrus codex. While the canon of the New Testament was gradually being formed, different Christian writings were being copied and collected into volumes written on papyrus, such as this codex containing the Epistles of Paul. Only in the fourth century, with the acceptance of Christianity by Constantine, did the New Testament as we know it take form in a single volume. Papyrus was replaced by parchment, then by paper, as manuscripts grew more decorative and eventually gave way to printed books. Below is a simplified timeline showing how the form of the Bible, particularly the New Testament, has evolved over the past two thousand years. All books prior to the advent of printing were manuscripts which, as their name implies, were copied by hand. These books, usually penned by professional scribes or highly trained monks, were prone to errors made by the person copying the text. As a result, no two copies of the same book could be expected to contain exactly the same text. When modern editors wish to reconstruct a text as accurately as possible, it is often beneficial to consult the oldest manuscript available, on the presumption that the older the manuscript, the closer it is to the original text.

Researcher dating papyrus scrolls
In my last post on the various discrepancies in the origin story of the Sappho papyrus published in , I mentioned an article by Dirk Obbink published in The Times Literary Supplement on 5 February In this article, Professor Obbink stated that—as a part of the process of authenticating the Sappho papyrus—a small piece of it was subjected to radiocarbon analysis.
The first thing to note is that this article by Professor Obbink is, as far as I know, the only time the radiocarbon analysis of this papyrus has been mentioned in print.
This segment of the Great Harris Papyrus, an official Egyptian document dating to the reign of. Ramesses III (first half of the twelfth century), is an excellently.
Following notes written by an English traveler in the early 19th century and two French pilots in the s, Pierre Tallet made a stunning discovery: a set of 30 caves honeycombed into limestone hills but sealed up and hidden from view in a remote part of the Egyptian desert, a few miles inland from the Red Sea, far from any city, ancient or modern. During his first digging season, in , he established that the caves had served as a kind of boat storage depot during the fourth dynasty of the Old Kingdom, about 4, years ago.
Then, in , during his third digging season, he came upon something quite unexpected: entire rolls of papyrus, some a few feet long and still relatively intact, written in hieroglyphics as well as hieratic, the cursive script the ancient Egyptians used for everyday communication.

And this papyrus belongs to the reign of Siptah/Tawsert. After discussing the dating of the Papyrus, we went on to investigate how to locate and understand the.
Thus, the study of this kind of documents is important in understanding their administration. In this paper I would like to focus upon one single typical text, the Papyrus Greg, which had long been unpublished, although it is well-known to the Egyptologist. Now, however, Prof. Kitchen’s Ramesside Inscriptions contains a hieroglyphic transcription with a few textual notes. The document is now easily accessible.
Some scholars believe it was written in the reign of Ramesses III. We can read regnal year 5 to 7 in the Papyrus Greg but the king’s name is missing. If this papyrus was written in the reign of Ramesses III, we must suppose that about 12 months’ entries of the recto and 13 months’ entries of the verso are missing and must suppose a divergency of a month in the entries of the same length gap between recto and verso.
After considering the contents, we arrived at the conclusion that we cannot assume the existence of the gap—there is no gap. Already have an account? Login in here.
